Project Guiding Light

REACH Family Service Centre, located in Bishan, is currently looking for volunteers to be mentors for a youth mentoring project, Project Guiding Light. This project is done in collaboration with Singapore Police Force and 8 other secondary schools. Do participate in this meaningful cause of mentoring and guiding the youths through their developmental years, by volunteering as mentors. This experience would definitely be of value to psychology students.

As volunteers, you would be required to commit for the full duration of the programme, from February 2012 to October 2012. The mentors will be required to meet their youths around 1-2 times a month for the befriending and mentoring.

Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centres (AMKFSC)

AMKFSC is a voluntary welfare organisation that primarily serves low-income families living in Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, SengKang and Punggol. In addition, they support and assist individuals, groups and families who require casework and counselling support, and other forms of assistance.

AMKFSC would like to invite you to a briefing on an early literacy programme – Letterfriend. This programme is an early literacy programme which aims to establish a strong foundation of the language and literacy levels in the disadvantaged children aged four to eight.

AMKFSC is also seeking dedicated & matured volunteers to be part of the programme, Letterfriend.

Prospective volunteers can choose between 2 briefing sessions (Session A or B):

Session A

•   Date: 25 Feb (Sat)

•   Time / Duration: 2pm to 5pm

•   Venue: Our SengKang branch office (full address will be given to you when you RSVP for the briefing)

Session B

•   Date: 1 Mar (Thu)

•   Time / Duration: 7pm to 10pm

•   Venue: Our Cheng San branch office (full address will be given to you when you RSVP for the briefing)

LETTERFRIEND 2012 – EARLY LITERACY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Description

Letterfriend is an exciting and ground breaking early literacy programme which aims to establish astrong foundation of the language and literacy levels in the disadvantaged children aged four to eight.

This programme seeks to take on a holistic and integrated approach with components of a UK home-based reading curriculum and experiential learning activities. We are seeking mature, responsible & committed volunteers to partner us in working towards realising this meaningful vision. By becoming a Letterfriend volunteer, you can play a positively impactful role by improving the children’s future prospects, social inclusion and the avoidance of anti-social behaviours. Join us and make this a life-changing year for character and skills development!

Volunteers’ Roles and Responsibilities

The overall aim of Letterfriend is to help children who are under-achieving their age-appropriate literacy level by enhancing their phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge. More specifically, we would like these children to achieve the following goals with the help of volunteers. Training will be provided.

– recognise the sounds that letters make
– recognise at least the basic 26 letters’ sounds in words
– identify the initial letter of words


Minimum Requirements and Other Information:

– Minimum age: 18 and above 

– Minimum Educational Qualifications: ‘O’ Levels

– Language: English

– Have interest in working with young children and preferably with good reading skills

– Must be willing to travel to the child’s home once a week, and carry out one-to-one reading sessions

– Comfortable in communicating with the child’s parents.

Volunteer Briefing / Interview Sessions

We would like to invite those who are interested in volunteering for this programme to a briefing-and-interview session on:

a) 25 Feb (Sat) : 2pm to 5pm or;

b) 1 March (Thursday): 7pm to 10pm

Training sessions will be conducted towards the end of March.

  • Start & End Date: Apr 2012 to Apr 2013
  • Frequency: Once a week on any day/time of the week as long as there is a suitable match between the families and the volunteers
  • Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours each session
  • Minimum commitment Period: six months (ideally one year)
